Does utilization of healthcare navigation tools and services vary by plan type? We looked at Compass utilization at a large, high-tech manufacturing firm with employees located at multiple locations across the U.S. The company has 4,021 employees enrolled in three different medical plans: HMO, Consumer-Directed Health Plan (CDHP) and Traditional PPO.
- Average age for those enrolled in the HMO and PPO plans was older than those enrolled in the CDHP.
- Average tenure (number of years with the employer) for those enrolled in the HMO and PPO plans was longer than those enrolled in the CDHP… correlating with the older age of enrollees.
- Activation (a.k.a. ”utilization”) of Compass over a 12-month period was higher among CDHP enrollees than HMO and PPO enrollees.
- Interestingly, Compass Activation for HMO and PPO plan enrollees was similar and still significantly high.
Health Navigation Tools
For this large, nationwide employer, being on a CDHP plan correlated with younger employee age and greater use of Compass as a healthcare navigation solution. These results correlate with the general 80/20 rule of healthcare utilization: 80 percent of the claims are generated by 20 percent of the employees.
So, the number of employees who use their benefits corresponds with the number of employees who use Compass to help them navigate the healthcare system.
The fact that even those employees with “less” financial motivation to be better healthcare consumers (i.e. those employees on HMO and PPO plans), still have “consumerism” challenges in using their benefits and navigating the healthcare system—and therefore, use Compass.
Implications for Employee Benefits Professionals
Even though employee benefits professionals can expect a CDHP plan design to drive greater utilization, they should still consider it for all types of health plans. Employers who offer PPO and/or HMO plan design (alone or in conjunction with a CDHP) can still see significant utilization of a healthcare navigation solution.
