It’s important to help people with the little things so you can be by their side when the big things happen. This is especially true even when it comes to small healthcare wins and employee benefits.
For example, Compass members who might initially request help with low-dollar healthcare issues will expand their services. They will turn to us for more major issues in their second, third, fourth and fifth year with Compass. Here’s an example from one member’s experience:
The member’s first interaction with Compass was a doctor recommendation and scheduling the appointment. A simple step – but one that helped her to become more familiar with the Compass benefit offered by her employer.
Later, she became pregnant and gave birth to a beautiful child. Over the next three years, we assisted this member and her child 74 times, including providing 19 bill reviews. We also provided cost estimates related to:
- Prenatal care and testing
- Labor and delivery
- Dental care
- Optometry care
- Allergy testing and
- Upper GI endoscopy
In addition, we provided the member with multiple doctor recommendations for an allergist, gastroenterologist, ophthalmologist, dentist, and optometrist. We also recommended physical medicine and rehab (PM&R) to treat lower back pain by providing a steroid injection and physical therapy (a less invasive choice than an orthopedic surgeon)—showing strong healthcare consumer behavior.
Overall, Compass was involved in $40,000 worth of medical claims for this member… and it all started by providing a doctor recommendation and scheduling an appointment.
What This Means for Employee Benefits Professionals
The TIME to assist employees with their health and healthcare is when they have simple, relatively inexpensive issues. By establishing a relationship EARLY ON, members become more engaged, are healthier and save money for the member and the plan.
Waiting for a medical catastrophe to occur to engage members is too late. They are already caught up in the emotion and whirlwind of the healthcare system to be open to employee benefit programs.
